Overview :

The existing system of protected areas in the Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis is limited to three terrestrial protected area units on the island of St. Kitts (Brimstone Hill National Fortress, the Royal Basseterre Valley National Park and the Central Forest Reserve National Park). The Brimstone Hill National Fortress, however, has its own management structure and does not fall under the purview of the project. There are currently no terrestrial protected areas on the island of Nevis; with the aid of this project, Nevis Peak National Park and Camps River Watershed Area will be designated as protected areas. In addition, Booby Island Nature Reserve will also be designated under this project. The recently declared St. Kitts and Nevis Marine Managed Area includes all coastal waters around St. Kitts and Nevis within a two-mile radius. The St. Kitts and Nevis Marine Managed Area also include marine conservation areas in Keys, Sandy Point and The Narrows.

Two key outputs of the project are the establishment of a Protected Areas Agency and building the capacity of Protected Areas staff. Various Departments with responsibilities for terrestrial and marine resources are operating individually with some levels of corporation and collaboration. At the systemic level, the project will assist the Government of St. Kitts and Nevis in establishing, staffing and equipping a Protected Areas Agency, the first government unit dedicated to protected areas in the country’s history, which will oversee and manage the overall PA system as well as the specific PA units. However, consensus building on the definitive institutional structure is still required.
